Shutters, Blinds, or Something Else

We moved into our previously owned house 4 1/2 years ago.  Since we weren't the original owners, of course there were some things we wanted to change.  We have done some of those things, but we still have our little list. (Don't we all?)  Well, one of those things has been to replace those yucky, sun-damaged vertical blinds that we have in a lot of our windows.  We are lucky in that we do have shutters in the windows that face the front of the house, but everything else are these yucky things.

You can't tell from this picture, because it's the inside part of the blinds, but the other side is yellowed and yucky from the sun!!  So you have to make sure you turn them the right way or you see the yellowed side!!  As you can see, a couple of months ago Tyler was playing with a ball in his room and it hit the blinds and cracked one in half.  He was so worried I'd be mad, and came to tell me what happened.  He said "Mom, you're not going to be happy.  Something really bad just happened in my room."  So of course I was nervous to go see what it was, and when we got there and he showed me I said "Oh that's OK, I want to replace those anyways."  He was so surprised I didn't get mad, and he felt pretty lucky to have gotten away with this one.  I did tell him he needed to be more careful throwing a ball in the house, but inside I was saying "YES, more reason to get that done sooner!!"  As you can see, there is another one that got completely pulled down, and is totally broken, too.  Whoever invented these things obviously does not have any children!!!!  So, I've been getting quotes and trying to decide what to do.  I really like the look of shutters, even though they are more pricey.  Dave doesn't like how shutters cover up a lot of your window.  He likes to see out of the whole, big window.  I think shutters will be easier to take care than blinds.  It's Tyler's room, our master bedroom, and the family room that we need to replace.

So my question is what do you have on your windows, or want to put on your windows, and is there some great product I'm not aware of?????
Also, what do you put over sliding doors.  I want to rip out the stupid vertical blinds there, too, but what do you do to cover them??

We had those aweful blinds in our house in AZ. and I hated them. I would put in shutters. My parents have them throughout there house, and they love them. I'm not sure what to do about the sliding door-

I love shutters too. They can be pricey, but so nice. I think they would look very nice in your family room. In AZ we had a sliding door, and we had a heavy curtain to cover up the door. I really liked it, because on a nice day I would open it up all the way and let the sun shine in!

Oh, I will be so jealous when you get new blinds. I have the same ones you do. Invite me over when they are done!

I hate those vertical blinds...UGH! I have one right now on my sliding door. It seriously has 6-8 slats that broke out just since we moved in (not quite a year yet) I've tried to fix them several times using duct tape if you can imagine! It's NOT PRETTY! So I'm right there with you when you find a great solution for the sliding door, let me know. I have a friend that has those shutters that fold out over her sliding door and she loves them but she said they are WAAAAY expensive. I think they would be worth it though!

In my last house I got the longest nice curtain rod I could find for the sliding door. I then got those rings that clip onto fabric. The rings can then slide across the pole to let light in or keep it out. You can find long big fabric curtain panels at any home store or make your own.

We love our shutters and I'm a big open window kind of person. Curtains are fun too as they can be tied back. Looking forward to the after pics. :)
